I have owned a pair of Sennheiser 650, several Grados (all the way up to 325) as well as a few expensive studio monitors and I like these the best. The sound is similar to that of the old Koss PRO4AAA, but better. What I like about them is voicing and dynamics. The instruments sound what they really should sound like. The timbres are beautiful. All the details are there but they are natural and not overhyped. If you hear a guitar, for example, it is not like a string is plucked right next to your ear. If you hear drums, they have an impact that you can feel in your stomach. Also, these are very solidly made, and fold nicely in the included case. The downsides are: 1. They are not as comfortable as some others for extended listening sessions - but you get used to them. 2. They do require a longer break-in period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Memory, December 22, 2010

Yes, it brings back the memory of a set of 'phones I had way back over a decade ago. Back in the late '80s I had a set of Pro 4AAs that just blew me away, I considered them to be the ultimate headphones. They went by the wayside, unfortunately, long story. But, just recently I got a pair of Pro 4AAATs. (FWIW, I'm listening to them right now! -- Jeff Beck, Blow by Blow to be specific, through an older Pioneer receiver -- WOW!) These new phones are just as mind blowing as those older phones, sound wise. Equivalent. But they are a bit lighter and somewhat more comfortable to wear.

Caveat: These 'phones aren't the do-all, be-all 'phones that will be the very best for everybody. They are still kinda big, still on the heavy side (albeit lighter than its predecessors), and most of all they are high impedance phones. Yes, you can listen to them directly from a .MP3 device or an iPod, but they don't have enough "Ooomph" to make these 'phones 'sing'. You really need a... Read more

I bought my last pair of Koss headphones in 1998 and they still are amazing but wanted to upgrade to these and wow what an upgrade these are, brilliant, crisp sound, perfect amount of bass... even listening to movies sounds exactly like you are in a theater, I absolutely love these headphones. These are also about 50 bucks less than on the Koss website so this was a fantastic deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome pair of headphone that just need juice., March 4, 2011

Originally, I was disappointed with the SA-3000's. The sound was thin and the bass was non-existent. It didn't matter the source, straight out of the ipod, laptop, or even a home audio amp.

It wasn't until I bought a dedicated headphone amp that I heard the true potential of the cans. They are phenomenal. I paired them with a Headstage Arrow, and now everything sounds great. The high are present, the mids are not hollow, and you can just melt into the bass. I don't understand how the SA-3000's get such a low score, while the SA-5000's get such a high score with nearly identical drivers. Maybe the halo effect of having spent $400 on a pair of headphones?

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, February 27, 2008

Chris Kendrick (Double Springs, Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony MDR-SA3000 DJ Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
I bought these headphones because I will soon be moving to an apartment and wanted to use headphones as my primary way for hearing things. After listening to them for a few days now, I've come to the conclusion that these headphones are not for everyone, and here's why.

Upon taking them out of the box, one finds that they are EXTREMELY delicate. These headphones are not to be used in an environment that they will face a lot of movement and hostility. They have a somewhat cheaply made feel for so called "Super Audio" headphones, and I expected more from Sony. My faith was then somewhat revived when I plugged them up to my computer. Wow. These headphones have a quality that you won't find in your average store-brand headphones, in the way that they can bring out detail. I have gone through several different types of audio and video, noticing subtle differences and additions that I've never noticed before. That is where these headphones have strength, in revealing more depth... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars These Headphones are Terrible!!!!, March 19, 2006
This review is from: Sony MDR-SA3000 DJ Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
My experience with these headphones has been nightmarish. The nightmare began, when I had to replace the first pair after the bracket that hold the earcups in place collapsed on the right side. When I sent them back under the warranty, Sony had the nerve to charge me a "flat labor fee" of $24.00. I called customer service and asked them what labor was involved since they were just sending replacement headphones, but of course I got no satisfactory answer.

After receiving the replacement headphones, I thought the situation had been resolved when only after a month, I noticed a distortion in the sound coming from the headphone on the right side. Upon examination, I discovered that an electical short was in the cord itself. So, I had to send these pair back and now I'm on the third pair!

My advice to anyone thinking about purchasing a pair of these poorly designed headphones is to steer clear of these puppies or you'll be sorry!

I think you get a little more than what you pay for with this product. Grant it it is not as effective as $400 noise cancellation headset, but it works fine for my application. I use my pair in my office, when not in meetings or on the phone I am writing or doing calculations on the computer, while performing these latter tasks I like to listen to classical of other type of soft music. This headset enhances the sound and at the same time reduces considerably the surrounding noises: HVAC, conversations in the hallway, etc...

5.0 out of 5 stars great performance for the price, May 7, 2012
This review is from: dr. Tech ANC-125B High-Grade Active Noise-Cancelling Headphone with case (Electronics)
I use headphones for hearing protection while operating lawn equipment. I gave these phones five stars ***** not because they compare to the phones in the $300.00 range, but because they provided what I was looking for at a very reasonable price. The noise cancelling feature cuts the mower noise way down. I can listen to music or a ball game without cranking the volume way up to drown out the outside noise. The cord is removable, so they can be used without a radio or music player. I lost two pairs of expensive headphones when the cord snagged and pulled out of the headphone. The cord on these phones just pulls from the jack with no damage. These work great for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price, December 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: dr. Tech ANC-125B High-Grade Active Noise-Cancelling Headphone with case (Electronics)
When I got these, I expected really good quality, but then I remembered the price. The bass is there, the clarity isn't the best, and the noise cancellation is more like 30% of outside noise. I'm sure 85% would cancel out more sound. Overall, I think this headphone is pretty nice. The feel to it and the weight is really nice. It also comes with a nylon semi-hard case to put your headphones in. I would recommend this due to the relatively low price.
