4.0 out of 5 stars A top grade effort, May 14, 2009
This review is from: Denon AH-D7000 Ultra Reference Over-Ear Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
The AH-D7000 is the newest flagship reference headphone from Denon, a company usually known for their home theater electronics. Denon made a mark in the headphone market a couple of years ago when they introduced the AH-D1001, AH-D2000, AH-D5000 providing a well-rounded sound quality in the crowded market of premium headphone makers like Sennheiser, AKG, Audio Technica.

What I noted in my D2000/D1001 review is they are good headphones which have no glaring faults. They tend to have a very musically pleasing sound quality that doesn't dull the performance quality of the music, with their authoritative bass, clear and sparkly highs, but they don't overdo it either. They seem to do justice to most music types. So this "ultra reference" model carries on that tradition. The MSRP of this headphone is $999, and that puts it in the "ultra-expensive" category, but fortunately, you can actually find it discounted fairly steeply sometimes which brings the price down to earth a bit... 5.0 out of 5 stars The best headphones I have ever heard, but..., December 20, 2009
This review is from: Denon AH-D7000 Ultra Reference Over-Ear Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
I would say the original price of $999 is probably a bit of a stretch on my wallet for these cans, but I would probably say that about ANY headphones. I bought these from a local dealer for right around $700 and I could not be happier with them.

The sound quality is phenomenal and the BASS is the best I have ever heard from a set of headphones. If you like bass, there is no doubt you will absolutely love these cans. All that being said, the bass is not overpowering at all, in fact the entire spectrum of sound is warm and completely audible. If you like hip hop, trance/electronica, rock, or any kind of music with punch, these are the headphones for you. I cannot really speak on jazz and classical, but I have read many reviews suggesting that these cans are a bit to bassy for those particular genres.

Now for the "but". These are NOT the headphones you would want to plug directly into an Ipod. If that was your plan, don't waste your money. For that, you can buy a... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly good, April 30, 2009
By
This review is from: Denon AH-D7000 Ultra Reference Over-Ear Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
Its the bass. that's where it starts. No other phones have bass exyension like this. Not boomy or sloppy, but it goes all the way down. No other phones can do this.

Without sacrificing magical transparency and extension, smoothly through the midrange to the extreme highs, the foundation, the low end, of these cans, more than any other, creates a magical soundstage. If its on the recording, you'll hear it, unattenuated, flat, all the way to 20Hz. I've never experienced this in cans before. These Denon 7000s can create the impressive, sometimes shocking impact that I've only heard before from huge speaker systems like Pipedreams or big Wilsons. The way Pipedreams can pressurize a room, so these Denons can pressurize your soundfield, but they manage to sound totally natural doing so. I've never heard better cans. Compared to Audio-Technica W5000, they seem not to have the excess air on top like the A-Ts, but the A-Ts are so bass shy. Sometimes I miss the... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars OK Product, January 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Labtec 980425-0403 Elite 835 In-Line Vol Control Headphone (Electronics)
I enjoyed these headphones while they lasted. They were very comfortable (for me) and isolated outside sound pretty well. The sound quality was also quite good for the price, and they have a long cord.

My problem with the product was the cheap construction. I used these headphones seated at my computer. One day I stood up while wearing them, and I was standing on the cord. Before I could react, the left earphone popped out, and snapped the puny wire connecting the right earphone. I know that this was 'User Error', but you would be amazed at how little pressure it took to break these headphones.
Because of the price, and because I didn't want to wait for a warranty replacement, I just bought a different brand locally for about the same price.

All in all, if you do buy these, and treat the gently (tie up excess cord), you'll probably be satisfied. However, I would recommend the... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable headphones with good sound. Brittle plastic, though., October 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Labtec 980425-0403 Elite 835 In-Line Vol Control Headphone (Electronics)
I bought these headphones a while back as a replacement for an older set. They are surprisingly comfortable, not to heavy and don't get the ears hot after prolonged use. The sound quality is good, about what you would expect from an inexpensive set of headphones. The plastic used is somewhat brittle. In the climate I live in, it can get very cold, which certainly doesn't help. I recently had the left band above the headphone as I was taking them off on a particularly cold day, so I'm looking for a replacement now. I would still recommend them. They're a good product for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars inexpensive, comfortable, decent sound, April 14, 2009

This review is from: Labtec 980425-0403 Elite 835 In-Line Vol Control Headphone (Electronics)
The headphones are very comfortable, even for a person with big dreads like myself. The sound is decent, not amazing, but you can hear good highs and lows. One complaint is the volume could go a little louder. The cord is nice and long. The headphones seem pretty durable. I have had it for a month or so and it sits in the bottom of my backpack with good deal of abuse. It hasn't shown wear or damage. I compared this with the 825's at school, there is very little difference. I think the 825's put out a little more volume and muffle outside noise a bit better, but they also fit a little bit tighter. The 825's might be preferred by those with smaller heads. For the money they are both a good deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural and Immersive Sounding Headphones, February 23, 2010

I've owned these headphones for about a month and feel I'm ready to review them.

If I could pick two words to describe these headphones, the words would be Natural & Immersive.

I own a couple other Sennheiser products: the EH350 and the HD560. Comparing the three, the HD438 is my favorite. They're easier to drive than the HD560 and they sound better & are more comfortable than the EH350.

Sound Quality:
Detail is very important to me, and the HD438 does disappoint. I hear all the little nuances in music that other lesser headphones (like the EH350) tend to smooth over. The HD438 has a pretty wide soundstage for a sealed headphone as well. Instruments are well separated as well. They have good bass, better than both the EH350 and HD560. I'd say the bass is neutral, not too... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars HD438's - the best value for comfort, May 10, 2010

This review is from: Sennheiser HD438 Closed Circumaural Hi-Fi Headphone with Enhanced Bass (Electronics)
Just received these, so these are my first impressions. More to come later - long term observations, measurements and photos.

1) Very light, all plastic construction. The only metal I can see are the screws holding the vertical hinge above the ear cup for slight swivel action

2) The pressure on the ears is just about right to give a good seal to the head, but not to make them uncomfortable over extended periods. The velour pad material though is warm to the feel. Perhaps good in the cool, but in this warm spring it's very noticeable (I believe leather effect replacements are available from Sennheiser). The ear cups fit perfectly around my ears, but with no spare room. It may be that being 'over the ear', not 'on the ear' 'phones, the encapsulation of the ears retains heat (Later, I shall try my Bose QCII headphones with their pad material and compare the feeling)

3) Don't like the "wheel trim" chrome design. Black and plain would be more... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars All-around amazing, especially for rock, April 21, 2010

This review is from: Sennheiser HD438 Closed Circumaural Hi-Fi Headphone with Enhanced Bass (Electronics)
I first learned of Sennheiser's new 4x8 line of closed headphones when I saw someone around my campus wearing an unfamiliar pair of Sennheisers. Devoted Sennheiser fan that I am, I looked into it and learned they were HD-448s. Eventually I decided to check out their little brothers, the HD-438s, and I am very happy I did. These are possibly the all-around best headphones for under $100 I've had opportunity to try.

I'll start with the sound quality. In short, these are far and away the best closed headphones I've ever heard; they compete ably with my similarly-priced open headphones in clarity. (They don't have super-pumped bass like the box seems to indicate) My Sennheiser HD-555s cost about the same and sound a bit better, but only barely. The 438s are a bit low on the mids compared to the 555s, which also have slightly more defined bass. But these differences are barely noticeable and the 438s have only had about ten hours of burn-in so far, so they'll likely improve... Read more
