I had never had an over ear headphone before and wanted to get something nice. The sound is very clear and I was able to hear every little subtle thing in the music. I prefer these headphones over other over ear ones because the bass is not overwhelming, but still very present and very crisp. There was a noticeable difference in what you hear when you have different quality of song files...which leads me to believe that these headphones are capable of amazing sound as long as your songs are of high enough quality.Pros: -Lightweight and comfortable -Sound extremely clear -Open headphone (so you don't hear yourself breathing and whatnot) -Sound gets better the more you use them Cons -The cord does not detach like in the AKG 240 model -Length of the cord makes using these headphones outside awkward -$300 is expensive (I bought them when they were on... Read more 11 of 14 people found the following review helpful Great "Semi-Open" (should be called OPEN) Headphones, This review is from: AKG K 242 HD High-Definition Headphones (Electronics) AKG headphones are some of the best designed headphones you can buy, both in terms of product design (comfort, aesthetics, functionality) and engineering (sound quality is amazing!). The AKG K 242 HD's are no exception. They sound fantastic, are a joy to wear, and have a build quality rarely seen in products today (the gimbal suspension system for the earcups and the self adjusting metal wire frame are two very well designed features, unique to AKG). Like most high end audio equipment, one should expect a ramp up in sound quality as the product gets broken in (which is a good thing as they will only get better with use). Out of the box these headphones sound great (as far as my non-audiophile aural senses can discern). As is the case with most AKG headphones of this line the bass is a bit lean, but is very well balanced. In my opinion, the fact that I consider them bass-lean is simply a condition of the inferior quality of audio experiences most of us experience in our lives... Very light weight, despite the huge size. Portability is probably a no-no because the earcups are so big, they actually clamp on to your chin, and the cord is 10 feet long. But I still use them when I'm traveling. Haha. Speaking of portability, these headphones can go up to a sufficient volume without an amp, even on my PSP (which can't go very loud). But you should note that everything sounds better when properly amped. You will notice a stronger and punchier bass, but nothing too heavy like a ghetto blaster bass. Sound quality is great. I'm loving the semi-open sound. I hear sounds coming in every direction. When I close my eyes, I can imagine the places on a square planar where the sounds are coming from.
